Eid-el-Kabir: FRSC introduces digital breathalyzers to curb alcohol consumption while driving

Marshal Shehu Mohammed of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says breathalyzers have been deployed in parking lots and roads to check for drunk driving.

While addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Mohammed said the implementation was in collaboration with the Beer Sector Group (BSG).

He said the essence of the implementation was to control and stop drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol as well as minimise deaths on the roads.

According to the Police Delegate, I believe that the majority of motorists who consume substances before getting behind the wheel always meet with a fatal accident.

“Another serious road offence we are confronted with is driving under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

“This is a deadly road traffic behaviour that has resulted in unprecedented accidents and deaths on the roads.

“In addition to the above interventions, the police also carried out aggressive awareness campaigns for all road users.

“This time, we are bringing it to your home. We are starting with training these drivers at their loading docks, transit campsites and RV parks.

“The essence of the exercise is to ensure that the defence protects the conscience of these drivers from unnecessary violations of traffic rules,” he said.

Mohammed appealed to drivers, especially passengers, that without their contribution, the emergency responders could not have an accident-free celebration.

According to him, this is achieved by checking the excess of these drivers on every trip from one destination to another.

“If drivers are found driving recklessly, they as travellers have the right to speak up and report these drivers to the FRSC officials or any other road safety body.

“As expected, with the mass deployment of these breathalyzers and the expected public support, the force is confident that the celebration will be a grand success,” he said.

The FRSC boss assured drivers of renewed vigor to ensure sanity on the roads and wished all Nigerians a safe and peaceful celebration of Eid-El-Kabir.
