The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, says the Federal Government is committed to effective border control and the working conditions of officials and men at the borders.
Nandap said this when he visited some borders in Katsina and Jigawa as part of his assessment visit to the borders with Nigeria.
A statement by the service’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, on Saturday in Abuja said Nandap visited Patrol Base Fago and Forward Operating Base Daura.
Others include Kongolam border check post and Magatari check post, where he inspected ongoing e-border projects and other facilities.
She “she enlisted the support of some key stakeholders in the border communities, including traditional leaders, youth leaders, transport unions and market women.
“Nandap sought his cooperation in protecting the borders, especially in the vast unmanned areas.
She educated them about the dangers of transnational organized crime, such as migrant smuggling and human trafficking,” she said.
Nandap highlighted the need to always provide useful information on the activities of irregular migrants.
She called for continued cooperation in the task of effective border management, noting: “A secure border is a secure nation.”
The head of the immigration department ordered border officials to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism in the performance of their duties and to be extremely vigilant in managing the borders.
He said the government was committed to improving working conditions for all border agents by providing logistics, accommodation and training.
