The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has advised commuters to warn drivers against reckless driving, especially during the rainy season.
Dr. Yusuf Suberu, Squadron Leader of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) Mayors of the Federation, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.
Suberu said given the spate of carnage on the roads, it was imperative that the VIO alert the public on the need to caution motorists against reckless driving.
He encouraged commuters to report if drivers are reckless or violate traffic rules and regulations.
“Passengers should tactfully reprimand drivers whenever they drive recklessly without distracting them.
“It is your responsibility to advise drivers to comply with safety rules.
“Data shows that passengers are often victims of accidents, while drivers often escape unharmed,” he said.
The VIO boss appealed to commuters to be proactive and ensure their safety, especially during the rainy season when the roads are slippery and wet.
Suberu said the mayors are supporting police officers and DRTS men to ensure the safety of lives and properties on the highway.
“We will continue to support DRTS personnel in cracking down on traffic violations and other crimes to prevent road accidents.
“These offenses include reckless driving, not wearing a seat belt while driving, talking on the phone while driving, one-way driving, obstructed driving, using worn tires, overloading and others,” he said.
However, Suberu also advised drivers to avoid consuming intoxicating substances and driving while intoxicated to avoid unnecessary loss of life or loss of life.
VIO Mayors are volunteers who help professional transportation managers from the 36 states and the FCT to alleviate congestion and traffic problems through an extended volunteer approach.
