The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning that no form of anti-government protest will be tolerated in the FCT on August 1, 2024. This announcement followed the meeting of the FCT Security Council, which included the heads of various security agencies and the six FCT Area Council Chairmen.
The Minister stressed that although the right to protest is enshrined in law, the planned protest coincides with the scheduled presentation of certificates of recognition to traditional rulers in all Area Councils of the FCT. He stated that August 1 is dedicated to the celebration of traditional institutions in the FCT and not anti-government demonstrations.
“For anyone who wants to protest on or around August 1, the FCT is not available for such protests,” Minister Wike stated. “This is the day the FCT has set aside for all Area Councils to rejoice and distribute Certificates of Appreciation to all their traditional rulers.
Minister called on residents of the FCT to join in the celebration and acknowledge the achievements of the administration. He also stated that anti-government protests are unnecessary given the significant support and rapid infrastructure development provided by the Federal Government.
“We have seen the changes in the FCT and we have seen that the government is working. Mr. President has been very supportive of the FCT and we will not allow anyone to stand in our way. We are committed to making the FCT a great city, not only in Africa, but in the world,” Wike added.
The Minister urged Nigerians to work collectively with the government to address the country’s challenges, highlighting the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve these issues and calling for patience from citizens.
“In this period, we believe that all Nigerians must work collectively to save our country. Mr President and his team are working hard to resolve the challenges facing our country. We urge Nigerians to be patient because we believe that we will overcome these economic issues,” he concluded.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud and senior officials of the FCTA.
