As part of ongoing efforts to modernize transportation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, today inaugurated the construction of a state-of-the-art bus and taxi terminal in Abuja’s Central Business District (CBD).
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Barr. Wike emphasized the FCT Administration’s dedication to expanding and enhancing transportation infrastructure, a commitment made possible by the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He highlighted that the completion of road infrastructure in the FCT is only the first step—effective integration with modern bus and taxi terminals is essential to fully realize the potential of the region’s transportation network.
“This new terminal is a critical addition to our ongoing infrastructure projects, and it will be built to the highest standards, with facilities including restaurants and relaxation areas,” said Barr. Wike. “This project is not just about improving transportation; it’s also about enhancing security within the FCT.”
The Minister recalled the recent commencement of construction on two other bus terminals in the Mabushi and Kugbo areas, noting that the addition of a terminal in the CBD would contribute significantly to addressing security concerns in Abuja. He explained that by ensuring that buses and taxis are operated by identified and regulated entities, the project would reduce the risk of crimes such as the notorious “one chance” robberies in the FCT.
“With this terminal, we will be able to track and identify vehicles, thereby improving safety for all commuters. No longer will people have to flag down unmarked vehicles on the streets,” Barr. Wike stated. “This initiative is part of the broader Renewed Hope Agenda under President Tinubu’s leadership, and we are committed to its timely completion.”
The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, also addressed the gathering, lauding Barr. Wike’s visionary leadership. She highlighted the crucial role the FCT Transportation Secretariat has played in bringing this project to fruition, noting that the new terminal would significantly enhance the transportation network in the FCT.
“The completion of this project will be a milestone in the city’s development, reflecting our Administration’s commitment to improving public services for all residents,” Dr. Mahmoud said.
In his remarks, Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FCT, commended the Minister for his efforts in modernizing the FCT’s transportation infrastructure. He pledged the continued support of the National Assembly in driving infrastructure development across the FCT.
Hon. Abdulrahman Ajiya, representing the Abuja South Federal Constituency, also praised the strategic location of the new terminal in the city center, underscoring the importance of such infrastructure for the future growth of Abuja.
Dr. Chinedum Elechi, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Transport Secretariat, provided further details on the project, stating that the new terminal is expected to reduce road congestion significantly, leading to faster travel times within the FCT.
Engr. Biodun Otunola, the project contractor, assured attendees that the terminal would be an iconic addition to Abuja’s landscape, featuring modern amenities such as elevators, CCTV, retail shops, and ATMs. He committed to delivering a high-quality project on time.
