The Dr Yusuf John-Suberu Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has called for collaboration with the government to address the growing mental health challenges in the country.
This was stated by the Executive Director of the foundation, Dr. Yusuf Suberu, in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.
I even went as far as to say that mental health problems are exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and that increasing poverty and access to treatable health problems are contributing to the problem.
He, however, said that a concerted effort was needed to address the mental health challenge, stressing the importance of sustained funding to support mental health initiatives.
The NGO boss suggested a multi-pronged approach to address mental health problems, including:
education and awareness, community initiatives, policy reforms, among others.
“Mental health is a critical issue that requires urgent attention. We cannot do this alone and that is why we call on the government to work with us to find lasting solutions.
“We must overcome our dependence on international grants and donations.
“We also need to raise awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma of mental illness.
“In other words, it is important that advocates of policy reform ensure access to health and social services that can be addressed,” he said.
Suberu, who is also a professor of international affairs, asserts that effective cooperation between NGOs and governments has significant benefits.
He added that governments can provide NGOs with the resources they need to expand their activities and extend their reach.
