The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has inaugurated a sweeping reform agenda aimed at enhancing national security and migration management.
The move follows a statement signed on Saturday by the Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, during the service’s annual conference in Jos, Plateau, and issued by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr. Kenneth Udo.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference, which was held from Wednesday, October 30 to Saturday, November 2, was themed “Improving Border Security and Migration Management in a World globalized: challenges and opportunities for Nigeria”.
He said the conference was attended by 448 participants, including senior government officials, diplomats and stakeholders.
Nandap said the event aimed to assess service readiness, identify emerging challenges and develop sustainable strategies to reposition NIS.
“NIS will continue to work with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
“Cutting-edge technology is being used to improve border security and migration management.
“A strategic plan is being developed, based on the federal government’s foreign direct investment and tourism initiatives.
“Immigration offices will be restructured to improve information collection and community engagement.
“The reformulation of processes will promote professionalism, patriotism and discipline,” he said.
He also said that training and capacity development would be a priority to improve knowledge acquisition and professionalism.
According to her, a strong health and retirement insurance system will be created for retirees.
The NIS boss thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his support.
The Governor of Plateau State, Mr. Caleb Mutfwang, was also thanked for his hospitality and support in making the conference a success.
