The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has advised drivers to exercise caution due to the hazardous driving conditions caused by the foggy and hazy weather typical of the harmattan season.
Yusuf Suberu, FCT Team Leader at the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and Speaker of the House of Federation, was summoned for an online interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Suberu recalled that the dry season is characterised by cloudy and foggy conditions that can reduce visibility and increase the risk of road accidents.
He stressed the need for greater awareness on road safety this season and urged road users to remain disciplined and vigilant to prevent accidents.
I call on motorists to avoid speeding, especially when trying to make multiple trips for financial reasons.
“Roads are notoriously busy during the hot months, but it is important that motorists and pedestrians take precautions to ensure their safety and that of their property.
“Drivers have a responsibility to keep their vehicles in good working order, including regular maintenance, to prevent accidents.”
“Motorists are advised to be aware of potential hazards such as detours and road disruptions caused by road construction works across the country,” he added.
Suberu stressed that overloading and speeding are particularly dangerous during the dry season, as they increase the risk of serious accidents.
He explained that overloading affects the performance of the vehicle and affects the driver’s ability to react safely in critical situations.
The VIO official advised drivers to abide by traffic rules and regulations to proactively prevent accidents during the dry season.
He urged road users to prioritize their own safety and that of others, take extreme precautions, and abide by all safety rules while driving.
“Speeding is a very dangerous behavior that results in a significant number of road deaths and casualties.
“There is no denying that the hot months bring increased traffic, leading to greater impatience among drivers and a greater likelihood that they will not obey traffic laws.
“Remind drivers to be patient, keep their vehicles in good condition through regular maintenance, respect speed limits, avoid overloading, and obey all traffic rules.”
“Together, we can make our roads safer by driving responsibly, being more tolerant, and caring for each other.
“If we can achieve a society without accidents if we all leave ourselves behind,” he added.
