The acting Controller General, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr Sylvester Nwakuche has called on officers and men of the service to display the right attitude in the discharge of their duty especially towards inmates.
While addressing officers on Thursday in Abuja on the theme “Character Review and Attitude Change”, Nwakuche stressed the importance of achieving desired productivity and improving the reputation of the service.
Nwakuche said the call for attitude adjustment became necessary as the service reiterated its commitment to holistic reforms in the NCoS focused on rehabilitation, reformation and redemption.
He said the vision of the service prioritizes staff welfare, training and community engagement to ensure effective service delivery and enhanced public safety.
“I have already spoken about the expectations of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
“If we do not change our attitude and character, the workforce will be toxic and if an environment is toxic, nothing is progressive and everything becomes redundant.”
“In our dealings with prisoners, we must prioritize mutual respect, empathy and professionalism. “This will build public confidence in our ability to reform and rehabilitate,” he said.
Nwakuche promised to create an enabling work environment, sought the support of officers and urged them to embrace change by striving for excellence in their roles.
The acting CG also urged police officers to “renew” their character and mindset, saying that change in character and attitude was imperative in all consequences.
In his presentation, Dr. Joseph Danley, national president of the Foundation for the Correction of Moral Decline, said patriotism and love are vital to national growth and development.
“Without patriotism, our collective progress will be hampered.
“We must infuse these values into our daily interactions and foster a culture of excellence and integrity,” he said.
