The Federal Government has upgraded the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kuje and Suleja to improve the living conditions and rehabilitation of inmates.

Speaking during a visit to the facility on Tuesday, the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, attributed the improvements to the renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to him, the aim is to reach out to prisoners and provide them with opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The improvements include the expansion and equipping of the clinic with modern medical equipment, such as a state-of-the-art scanner and physiotherapy machines, as well as the construction of a new command and control unit for real-time monitoring of the facility.

Nwakuche said: “The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has shown great commitment to improving the welfare of NCoS staff and prisoners.

He also said the minister’s efforts had transformed the institutions and provided inmates with an environment more conducive to rehabilitation and reform.

“The minister’s commitment to improving the welfare of staff and prisoners is evident in the improvements which include providing quality healthcare to prisoners, meeting their health needs and promoting their overall well-being.”

“The clinic at the Kuje facility has been expanded and equipped with modern medical equipment including a state-of-the-art scanner, physiotherapy equipment, X-ray machine and a standard medical laboratory,” he said.

He added that the agency was also underlining its zero-corruption policy with merit-based promotions to boost morale and encourage excellence.

However, Nwakuche warned staff that “any misconduct will result in disciplinary action” and urged them to “uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity to ensure that the reputation of the agency is maintained.”

According to him, the agency works tirelessly to ensure that all prisoners are held safely and humanely, while providing them with opportunities for rehabilitation and reform.
