As Nigeria joins the global community to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has called for stronger collective action toward preventing drug abuse at every level of society.

Speaking during a **Jumat prayer session at the National Mosque in Abuja, Marwa emphasized that the key to defeating the drug crisis lies in investing in prevention, which he described as both more effective and cost-efficient than rehabilitation. This prayer session formed part of a week-long series of events commemorating World Drug Day, which this year carries the theme, “Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.

“This prayer gathering helps us reflect on our progress, identify challenges, and renew our spiritual and community commitment to ending drug abuse in Nigeria,” Marwa stated.

Marwa revealed that under his leadership, the NDLEA has made significant strides in combating drug-related crimes across Nigeria. These include: 66,085 arrests of suspected drug offenders 12,205 convictions secured in court Seizure of over 11,000 tons of illegal drugs Destruction of more than 1,500 hectares of cannabis farms Rehabilitation and counseling of over 26,000 individuals

“Imagine 400 trailers lined up across 15 kilometers—that’s the amount of drugs we’ve taken off the streets,” Marwa noted, urging Nigerians to appreciate the progress while praying for more impactful results.

Marwa praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially its focus on tackling youth unemployment and food insecurity. According to him, these are major root causes that often push vulnerable populations, especially the youth, into substance abuse.

“When people face hardship, poverty, and hunger, many seek escape through drugs. That’s why economic empowerment is a vital part of our drug control strategy,” he added.

He called on state governments to align their programs with the federal agenda by investing in youth employment skills development and community welfare

Stressing the importance of collective responsibility, Marwa underscored that drug prevention must begin at home, with parents playing a central role. He also advocated for a “whole-of-society approach” involving:

Religious institutions, Traditional leaders, Civil society organizations, Labour unions, Schools and media outlets

Marwa shared that the NDLEA has already conducted over 11,000 sensitization campaigns nationwide, targeting schools, marketplaces, parks, and other public spaces.

“Even when resources are limited, children need love, guidance, and supervision. Responsible parenting can go a long way in protecting young lives,” he stressed.

In his sermon, Prof. Khalid Aliyu, an Imam at the National Mosque, echoed Marwa’s call by urging Nigerians to fully support the NDLEA’s mission. He described drug abuse as a national threat that is destroying lives, futures, and mental health, particularly among the youth.

“Islam clearly forbids intoxicants. Drug abuse is tearing families apart, fueling crime, and robbing our young people of their potential,” Aliyu said.

He emphasized the importance of spiritual and moral guidance alongside law enforcement efforts and called for consistent engagement from the religious community.

“We are not here just to pray but to raise our voices against this silent epidemic. Every faith, every family, every citizen must take responsibility.”

He concluded by praying for divine support for the NDLEA and all efforts aimed at restoring Nigerian youth to a path of dignity, health, and productivity

NAN reports that the Jumat prayer is one of several activities planned by the NDLEA for World Drug Day 2025, including a national press conference Collaboration with NGOs, quiz competition and Christian thanksgiving service

These events are aimed at creating awareness, encouraging prevention, and uniting the nation against the spread of drug abuse and trafficking.
