Dr. Patrick Ezie, Executive Director of Silver Cross Hospitals and Foundation in Abuja, explained that the Safe Motherhood Project was launched to provide free antenatal care to pregnant women in need.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Mr. Ezie explained that the initiative, launched in January 2024, has already helped more than 150 pregnant women who could not afford basic antenatal services.
When a woman in need presents herself to the hospital, we provide free antenatal care, checkups, and medication.
If she requires surgery, including a cesarean section, we also perform it free of charge, he said.
Dr. Ezie also revealed that the hospital is partnering with Global Health Promise, an international NGO that advocates for pregnant sex workers.
She explained that through this collaboration, sex workers in the Capital Territory have benefited from free comprehensive obstetric care, including cesarean sections and an incubation service for premature babies.
In addition to the “Safe Motherhood” project, Ezie said Silver Cross Hospital has conducted numerous public health initiatives and collaborated with other organizations to treat childhood cancer.
One of the core missions of Silver Cross Hospitals is to ensure universal access to healthcare.
As part of its special projects this year, the hospital also provided free breast cancer surgeries to more than 50 women across Nigeria, she added.
