The Chief Justice of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Husseini Yusuf, released four inmates from the Medium Security Prison (MSC) in Kuje, under the supervision of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS).
This decision was made in conjunction with a statement by Samson Duza, Director of Public Relations (CPRO) at the FCT headquarters in Abuja.
The Chief Justice explained that this measure is part of an action plan to expedite the administration of justice and decongest prisons.
He explained that this visit is part of the judiciary’s commitment to justice and the humane treatment of inmates.
As part of this action, four inmates were conditionally released. This measure is part of ongoing efforts to release those who should not be detained at the detention center.
“My duty is to ensure that those who are not here are released without unnecessary delay,” he added.
The Director of Correctional Services at the FCT Command, M. Olatubosun Ajibogun, thanked the judge and his team for their continued commitment to the administration of justice and decongestion in prisons.
This is the third time in six months that the judge and the presiding judge have visited a correctional center in the FCT. “This is a commendable gesture that deserves recognition,” he stated.
Ajibogun stated that some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) present at the center during the exercise had not paid bail for four released inmates.
This spirit is nurtured by interdisciplinary cooperation between the judiciary, the prison administration, and civil society to combat prison overcrowding and improve inmate well-being.
The Néanmoins welcomed the president of the court’s initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining synergies with the judiciary to improve the administration of justice and the humane functioning of prisons.
