The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has expressed satisfaction with the steady progress of ongoing road projects linking the Abuja Airport Expressway to Kuje and Gwagwalada, assuring residents that the projects are on schedule for commissioning in June 2026.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the projects in Abuja on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the Minister said the construction works had reached advanced stages and were progressing in line with the administration’s timeline. According to him, the road networks are strategic infrastructure expected to improve connectivity between satellite towns and the city centre while reducing travel time for commuters.
Wike explained that the projects are part of preparations to mark the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, adding that the FCT Administration remains committed to delivering impactful infrastructure that directly benefits residents.
He described the Airport Expressway–Kuje road as a vital corridor for transportation and regional development, noting that the project has reached 77 per cent completion. He also disclosed that work on the Kuje–Gwagwalada road is approaching 65 per cent completion and progressing steadily.
According to the Minister, the completion of the projects will provide an alternative route for residents and travellers, allowing commuters from Gwagwalada to access the city centre without relying on the main airport road. He noted that this development would help decongest traffic, shorten travel time, and stimulate economic activities across the satellite towns.
Wike commended the contractors handling the projects—Arab Contractors for the Airport–Kuje stretch and Gilmor Engineering for the Kuje–Gwagwalada dualisation—for their commitment and improved pace of work. He stated that the level of progress recorded since his last inspection visit was encouraging and reflected the administration’s determination to complete critical infrastructure projects.

The Minister reaffirmed that the road projects remain a major priority under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and are expected to support both urban mobility and economic growth in the FCT.
He expressed confidence that, based on current progress and assurances from the contractors, the projects would be ready for inauguration either in the early part of June or towards the end of the month.
Wike emphasised the importance of the road network, noting that it would provide relief for residents who previously relied heavily on the airport corridor for movement between satellite towns and the city. He added that improved access routes would also enhance safety, reduce travel stress, and open development opportunities in surrounding communities.
The Minister recalled that the Airport–Kuje road project was initially awarded in 2019 but experienced delays before being revived and accelerated by the current FCT Administration. He said the renewed focus and consistent supervision had helped to bring the project back on track.
With the anticipated completion of the road network, residents of Kuje, Gwagwalada, and neighbouring communities are expected to benefit from improved mobility, faster commuting, and increased economic activities.
The FCT Administration reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all ongoing infrastructure projects are delivered on schedule and meet the expected standards to support growth and development across the capital territory.
