The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended (*Okpravero Ufuoma*), an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II) for  allegedly soliciting financial gratification from a traveller.

NIS’s Comptroller General, Mrs Kemi Nandap, made this known in a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Kenneth Udo on Thursday in Abuja.

Nandap expressed her dismay, noting that the officer’s actions, which were captured in a video circulating on social media, starkly contrast with the professional values and ethics the NIS staunchly upholds.

She vehemently condemned the alleged misconduct, emphasizing that it subverts the ongoing reforms designed to elevate service standards. Nonetheless, she reassured the public that the officer had been suspended indefinitely, pending the outcome of formal disciplinary procedures in accordance with legal and Public Service regulations.

The video, titled “This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” showcases the officer soliciting financial gratification, which has brought significant embarrassment to the Service.

“This reprehensible act does not represent our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” she asserted. “Consequently, the officer has been suspended indefinitely, awaiting the results of disciplinary measures.”

Nandap reiterated the NIS’s unwavering commitment to rooting out corruption within its ranks, aligning with its zero-tolerance policy toward such malpractices. She assured that the Service remains dedicated to achieving excellence in service delivery, consistent with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

In her statement, Nandap mentioned the installation of electronic gates (e-gates) at all international airports, aimed at facilitating smoother passenger travel and preventing incidents like the one involving the suspended officer.

She encouraged the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption by NIS officers to the appropriate authorities.
