The FCT Minister Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has emphasized that the upcoming Africa Military Games will highlight the immense potential of both the FCT and Nigeria to the African continent and the global community.

Office of the FCT Minister said Barrister Wike made this statement during a joint World Press Conference held with the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, October 10, 2024. The press conference focused on the forthcoming Africa Military Games, scheduled to take place from November 18th to 30th, 2024, in the FCT.
The Minister noted that the Games would serve as a platform to demonstrate that Nigeria, particularly the FCT, is safe and secure. He expressed his gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for selecting the FCT as the host city for the event.
“What you have done is to take the bull by the horns by showcasing Nigeria and Abuja, in particular, to the entire of Africa and the world. This will have a tremendous impact on both the FCT and Nigeria,” said Wike. “People will come to realize that the FCT, Nigeria’s capital, is safe, and by extension, the entire country is safe. With over 3,000 participants visiting the city, they will return as ambassadors, spreading the word that Abuja is one of Africa’s finest cities, and Nigeria is truly progressing.”
Barrister Wike also stressed that the military’s role extends beyond warfare, noting that the Games will provide a platform for military athletes to exhibit their sporting talents. He reiterated the FCT Administration’s commitment to ensuring the successful hosting of the event.
“We will not miss this opportunity. The FCT Administration is fully committed to supporting the event and ensuring its success,” he added. “Many people do not realize that the military has athletes who are skilled in boxing, wrestling, football, and other sports. This event will allow them to unwind and bond with their counterparts from across Africa.”
Wike also emphasized the social impact of the Games, stating, “From November 18th to 30th, the social activities will contribute to a relaxed and festive atmosphere in the city. The FCT Administration will ensure that security is tight throughout the event.”
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the Africa Military Games as a prestigious event that brings together military personnel from across Africa to compete in various sporting disciplines. He highlighted the benefits the event will bring to the FCT and the armed forces, including fostering camaraderie among participants and strengthening military cooperation across the continent.
“The Africa Military Games will provide a platform for our armed forces to compete at an international level, exchange best practices, and build lasting relationships that will contribute to the security and stability of Africa,” General Musa said. He also expressed confidence that the event will meet international standards and bring global recognition to Nigeria.
Major General Maikano Abdullahi, President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), praised the sports facilities in the FCT, noting that the Games will promote friendship among military personnel in Africa. He confirmed that neighboring countries would be participating in the event.
The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, revealed the theme of the Games as *”Enhancing Military Cooperation Through Sports.”* He disclosed that at least 3,000 athletes and officials from 42 countries are expected to participate.
The briefing was attended by senior officers from the Defence and Service Headquarters, as well as the FCT Administration.
