The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has called for a holistic approach to improve road traffic safety in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr. Yusuf Suberu, Group Head, Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), Mayor of the Federation, made the call in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.
Suberu said a combination of law enforcement, education and technology was needed to reduce road accidents in the FCT.
However, he stressed that a concerted effort was needed among stakeholders and other energetic individuals.
He also stressed the importance of data analysis to identify accident hotspots and develop targeted interventions.
“Traffic enforcement, regular vehicle inspections and awareness campaigns are necessary as they are crucial for road safety.
“Even though inspection alone cannot solve the problem. We must also educate drivers and pedestrians on traffic rules and safety measures.
“The FCT can achieve a significant reduction in road accidents by implementing these measures,” he said.
Suberu stressed the need to improve road infrastructure, including road markings, signage and lighting.
However, he announced his intention to work with other road safety authorities to establish a unified traffic management system.
“We have increased inspections which has resulted in a significant reduction in road accidents involving commercial vehicles, but we will not rest and will do more to ensure that the FCT is free of RTCs.”
“The FCT deserves a world-class traffic management system.
The VIO boss commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike for their efforts in reducing road traffic accidents (RTC) in the region.
He also commended Field Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for the innovative ideas implemented to combat road accidents in the country.
He called on motorists and drivers to strictly adhere to traffic laws and use common sense on the roads.
This will complement the efforts of all road safety stakeholders in the 36 states and the FCT, he said.
