The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Command, deployed 2,517 officers and men, 83 patrol cars, ambulances, tow trucks and motorcycles for special Eid-El-Kabir patrol operations in the area.
The Sector Commander, Mr. Muta’a Chorrie, said this on Friday in Abuja during a press conference on Sallah 2024 Operations in the FCT.
Chorrie said the celebrations involved massive movements of vehicles and people across the FCT, which could lead to traffic congestion such as stagnation points, obstructions and road accidents (RTCs), among others.
He said the command conducted special patrol operations on Eid-el-Kabir to ensure that motorists and other road users had a safe and memorable celebration despite security challenges in the FCT.
“The operation will also ensure mass movement of vehicles and people in and out of the FCT, while ensuring thorough education of the public on the safe use of roads.
“That, as well as rescue operations, removing obstacles and enforcing traffic rules,” he said.
According to him, the focus of the operation is to demonstrate the visibility and capacity of the Corps in the FCT’s road corridors through the advance deployment of personnel and logistics.
“This will ensure a reduction in the number of road accidents (RTC), fatalities (RTF) and road injuries (RTI).
“This will also trigger a response to victims of road accidents, thorough public education and rapid removal of obstacles on highways, etc.
“Furthermore, the presence of the body on the highways must be good, the inspection of serious violations must be intensified, there must be adequate inspection, monitoring and observation, in addition to collecting feedback from drivers.
“For this purpose, the body deployed 549 officers and 1,243 commissioners, making a total of 2,517 people.
“The command also mobilized 54 vehicles, 15 ambulances, four tow trucks on standby and 10 patrol motorcycles, totaling 83 vehicles.
“These vehicles are used for visibility, patrolling activities, obstacle clearance, emergency services and rapid response to traffic issues in the FCT and surrounding areas,” he said.
Chorrie explained that the Corps will work with other sister agencies such as the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
He said other members include the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Fire Service (FFS) and the Directorate of the FCT Road Traffic Service (DRTS).
The sector commander added that the command will cover all 21 critical corridors during the period to ensure free movement of vehicles in and out of the FCT.
Chorrie assured that the rescue team would be on standby throughout the night, adding that there would be night rescue teams in all commands.
