Dr Yusuf Suberu, the Squadron Leader, Vehicle Inspection Office(VIO) Mayors of the Federation has called for public participation in improving traffic safety in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Suberu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said a combination of law enforcement, education and engineering was needed to reduce road accidents in the FCT.
He stressed that a collaborative effort among stakeholders was also needed.
Suberu also stressed the importance of data analysis to identify accident hotspots and develop targeted interventions.
“Enforcement of traffic laws, regular vehicle inspections and public awareness campaigns are essential.
“Even though law enforcement alone cannot solve the problem of car accidents.
“We must also educate drivers and pedestrians on traffic rules and safety measures.
“The FCT can achieve a significant reduction in road accidents through the implementation of these measures,” he said.
Suberu stressed the need to improve road infrastructure, including road markings, signage and lighting.
However, he announced plans to collaborate with other road safety agencies to establish a unified traffic management system.
“We have increased inspections, which has led to a significant reduction in road accidents involving commercial vehicles.
“But we are not resting on our laurels as we will do more to ensure that the FCT is free of road accidents.
“The FCT deserves a world-class traffic management system. We will work towards achieving this goal,” Suberu said.
The VIO boss commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike for its efforts in containing road traffic accidents (RTC) in the territory.
