As Nigeria celebrates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year in office, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has commended the president’s remarkable strides in advancing infrastructure and development, especially in the FCT.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, May 29, 2025, during a routine tour of infrastructure sites in Abuja, Wike described President Tinubu’s achievements as both impressive and unprecedented, especially under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“From what I see every day in the FCT—where I’ve been given the privilege to serve—it’s clear that Mr. President has performed excellently. This level of progress is unmatched,” Wike said.
He called on Nigerians across political divides to recognize and appreciate the visible improvements. “Even if you disagree with someone personally, when they do well, it’s only fair to say so,” he added.
According to the Minister, the transformation seen in Abuja today is due to the President’s bold and focused leadership. “We were all critics, saying Abuja wasn’t working. Now it is. Who made that possible? Mr. President. He deserves the credit,” Wike affirmed.
During the tour, enthusiastic chants of “four plus four” greeted Wike and his team—a sign, he said, of public appreciation and support for President Tinubu’s possible re-election. “Clearly, the people are saying the President should get another four years,” he noted.
Providing updates on major projects, Wike highlighted key sites scheduled for commissioning, including the completed 15km road linking OSEX II to Wasa, which connects Apo and Wasa District. He also mentioned the nearing completion of the Arterial Road N20 Interchange across the Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) and the Collector Road CN8 (Asuquo Okon Way) stretching from Obafemi Awolowo Way to Olusegun Obasanjo Way.
In response to concerns about the lack of streetlights on the OSEX II to Wasa route, the Minister explained that the project originated over ten years ago under a previous administration. However, in line with the current government’s dedication to continuity, the FCT Administration is completing it. Wike confirmed that a quotation for streetlight installation has already been submitted and will be implemented soon, even if not in time for the upcoming inauguration.
“Residents can be assured that streetlights will be installed on the OSEX II road from Apo to Wasa,” he stated.
The Minister reiterated that the FCT Administration is committed to providing top-quality infrastructure. He also encouraged Abuja residents to fulfill their civic responsibilities. “Our goal is to give Abuja residents the very best. Contractors are working hard, and we’re holding them to high standards. But residents also have a role to play. It’s a partnership,” he said.
On the ongoing strike by FCT primary school teachers over minimum wage issues, Wike expressed concern, describing the denial of education as dangerous to national stability. He promised that steps are being taken to resolve the matter swiftly. “What’s happening with the teachers is deeply troubling. We’re doing everything possible to get them back in classrooms soon,” he assured.
He also called on relevant National Assembly Committees, especially those focused on FCT Area Councils, to remain focused on their duties and help address the situation. “No one should be happy when teachers are forced to stay home. It’s a priority, and I can confidently say we’re working on a resolution,” he added.
