On Monday, June 16, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially launched the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network—a transformative initiative aimed at expanding clean water access across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

At the commissioning event, President Tinubu praised the FCT Administration for its commitment to delivering infrastructure that directly improves citizens’ quality of life. He particularly applauded the leadership of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his vision and people-centered approach.

“This is more than just a water project—it represents fairness and inclusion. It ensures every part of Abuja is part of our national progress. This is what our Renewed Hope Agenda is about,” the President stated.

He emphasized the administration’s focus on infrastructure as a foundation for growth, prosperity, and community well-being, noting, “Clean water to drink, to clean, to grow—that is how we define real development. These are the essential steps to dignified living.”

President Tinubu also extended appreciation to development partners, particularly the government of China, for their support and collaboration. “This project stands as a model of international cooperation that benefits the people,” he noted.

He urged FCT residents to protect the water infrastructure and use the resource responsibly to ensure long-term sustainability.

Addressing national concerns, the President expressed sorrow over the recent killings in Benue State, where around 200 lives were lost. He conveyed condolences to the victims’ families and promised to visit the state on Wednesday. “We are one family living in different rooms of the same house. Let’s uphold peace,” he appealed.

In his remarks, FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike acknowledged President Tinubu’s directive to prioritize the water project. He explained that the $470 million project, first awarded in 2017 under the Partnership for African Development Initiative, was largely financed—85 percent—by the Chinese government, with the remaining 15 percent funded by Nigeria’s federal and FCT governments.

“We appreciate your support, Mr. President. Thanks to your leadership, the Greater Abuja Water Network has been delivered,” Wike said.

He also revealed that new plans are in motion to partner again with the Chinese construction company CGC to extend water access to underserved communities such as Bwari, Kubwa, and Karu.

Chinese Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Zhang Yi, congratulated the Nigerian government and emphasized the project’s importance. Funded through China Exim Bank, the project, he said, had tripled the FCT’s water supply capacity, ensuring reliable access for residents.

Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, FCT Minister of State, also spoke at the event, commending President Tinubu for his enduring support to the FCT and praising Minister Wike for effective execution of the project. She said the achievement reflects the federal government’s inclusive development strategy.

The Greater Abuja Water Network includes extensive pipework across Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, and is expected to significantly boost water supply across 50 districts in line with the FCT’s master plan.
