President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
This assurance was made on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, during the official flag-off ceremony for the design and construction of a new annex building for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu described the proposed structure as a “centre for innovation, strategic planning, training, and transparency in managing electoral processes.”
He noted that as Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve, it is vital for the institutions that support it to evolve as well. He pledged his administration’s full backing to ensure that INEC is provided with the necessary infrastructure, legal tools, policies, and resources to carry out its constitutional duties effectively and courageously.

The President also applauded the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project. He described the new development as “a significant stride toward securing Nigeria’s democratic future,” and commended the Minister’s vision, dedication, and patriotic service.
He further recognized the efforts of INEC’s staff, thanking them for their continued commitment and contribution to building a more resilient democratic system in the country.
President Tinubu reminded citizens that democracy is an ongoing journey, urging all Nigerians to work together in strengthening democratic institutions, defending civil liberties, and securing the nation’s long-term stability.
In his remarks, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, expressed sincere appreciation to both President Tinubu and Minister Wike for supporting the initiative. He shared that the Commission had long faced the problem of limited office space, with the current headquarters overcrowded and requiring the lease of external buildings.

Professor Yakubu explained that the proposed annex—designed by INEC’s technical team—would ease operational pressure by complementing the existing main complex.
FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike confirmed that the Federal Executive Council approved the project in March 2025, with supervision assigned to the FCT Administration through the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

He assured President Tinubu that the project would be completed during his first term in office, stressing that the quality of work would match the level of federal investment and expectations. He also noted that the FCDA had previously been responsible for constructing key public infrastructure, including the current INEC building.
“With your administration’s support, we are confident this project will be delivered on time and to a standard that reflects its importance,” Wike affirmed.
Providing a technical brief, the Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, said the project covers a 1.5-hectare area and will feature a five-storey structure. The facility will include a media centre, library, museum, meeting rooms, a security control room, an energy room, executive offices, and a 1,000-seat auditorium, among other modern features.
