The maiden edition of the Ageing & Smiling Initiative was held with the inspiring theme “Golden Years, Golden Memories, bringing together senior citizens aged 60 years and above in a colourful celebration of life, wisdom, and resilience.
The programme, convened by Mrs. Victoria Asari Obona, was designed to honour the elderly while also supporting families and caregivers in their roles. The event featured health talks, reflections, light entertainment, and testimonies from participants, all centred on appreciating the value and contributions of older generations.
Sharing her inspiration for the initiative, Mrs. Obona said she felt both excited and overwhelmed by how the vision had become reality.
“I didn’t have the idea; I had the impression and the inspiration to do this, but I never knew how it would turn out. Growing old doesn’t have to be sad or lonely. You can grow old and still find joy in the things you do. That’s how the inspiration came: Ageing and Smiling,” she explained.
She added that the initiative will not be a one-off but will continue annually under different themes. “We intend to make sure the elderly feel loved, valued, and supported in their ageing journey. This will be an annual event to keep encouraging and strengthening them,” she said.

Her husband, Pastor Peter Obona, revealed that the inspiration came partly from caring for his mother-in-law.
“We saw how she grew from being a young woman into an older person, and that inspired my wife to start this programme. Old memories were relived today, and people shared testimonies that reminded us of the importance of wisdom as we age. God has given us everything we need to take care of ourselves, and gatherings like this encourage the elderly to do so with joy,” he said.
Guest speakers at the event stressed the importance of health, lifestyle, and intergenerational communication.
Dr. Brameta Gospel chojare, a public health advocate, and Optometrist, encouraged the elderly to prioritize their health.
“At this stage, your health should be your priority so you can enjoy the fruits of your labour. Speak up, seek support from your children and community, and live a healthy lifestyle. What you enjoy tomorrow depends on how you live today,” he advised.
Sarah Ugbana, another guest speaker, and founder of Azar initiative, urged both the young and the elderly to embrace openness and learning.
“Many young people run away from older adults because they don’t know how to communicate. The youth should be open to learning from the elderly, while older people should be willing to accept the help given to them. That’s how we build stronger relationships,” she said.
Several beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation for being honoured.
Deacon Engr. Bonny Onwuka, who recently marked his diamond jubilee, described the event as historic.
“I have never been honoured like this before. To be celebrated at 60 and above gives me joy. This programme sends a message of hope that it’s never too late to achieve more, and that ageing should not be seen as failure but as a time to cherish life,” he said.
Another participant, K.B. Aliyu, noted the health lessons gained.
“I learned a lot today about diabetes, eye problems, and family health. My family has suffered from these issues, and now I know what to do to prevent them. I am grateful to the organisers for this initiative,” he said.
For Mrs. Olatinwo lAdebukola, the programme was deeply personal and uplifting.
“I feel very awesome, very happy, because I didn’t expect what I met here today. God has been wonderful in my life, and this event reminded me that old school wisdom is still valuable. We must share experiences and pray for the younger generation so they can succeed,” she said.
