The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer highways across Nigeria during the 2025 Ember Months period, with several initiatives and operational reforms aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic crashes nationwide.
Speaking in Abuja during the 12th FRSC Valedictory Lecture Series, the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, assured Nigerians that the Corps had developed a robust plan to guarantee smooth and secure road use throughout the festive period.
The event, organised in honour of Deputy Corps Marshal (DCM) Chidiebere Nkwonta, who retired from active service at the age of 60, brought together key stakeholders, road safety experts, and public service officials.
According to Mohammed, the Corps will continue implementing its ongoing reforms across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ensuring that road safety operations align with international standards.
He explained that the FRSC’s renewed focus includes the deployment of advanced technologies and digital tools to enhance traffic monitoring, enforcement, and emergency response.
“The Corps will not leave any stone unturned in checking the excesses of motorists. We are determined to ensure effective traffic management before, during, and after the ember months,” Mohammed stated.
The Corps Marshal further stressed that the FRSC’s 2025 Ember Months Campaign was strategically designed to improve driver discipline, reduce road crashes, and enhance the safety of commuters as travel activities increase toward the year’s end.
In his remarks, Mohammed commended the remarkable contributions of the retired DCM Chidiebere Nkwonta, describing him as a diligent and visionary officer whose legacy of service would continue to inspire future generations within the Corps.
He urged serving officers to emulate Nkwonta’s exemplary leadership, integrity, and professionalism, which, he said, played a significant role in advancing the FRSC’s mission and operational success over the years.
“The dedication and hard work of senior officers like DCM Nkwonta have helped build the foundation of what the FRSC is today. We will continue to build on his legacy,” he added.
Delivering his valedictory lecture titled “How to Navigate the Vagaries of the Nigerian Public Service: My Experience, A Good Teacher,” Nkwonta shared valuable lessons drawn from his 35 years of meritorious service.
He urged younger officers to remain loyal, diligent, and disciplined in carrying out their duties, emphasizing that success in public service requires humility, consistency, and commitment to national values.
“Public service teaches patience, responsibility, and resilience. When you are loyal and committed to the system, your work will speak for you,” Nkwonta advised.
The retired Deputy Corps Marshal also paid tribute to some of his mentors and colleagues who provided guidance throughout his career, acknowledging their impact in shaping his professional journey.
He pledged to continue supporting the Corps whenever called upon, adding that his passion for road safety and national development remains unwavering.
Also speaking at the event, former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke, and other dignitaries commended Nkwonta for his years of service, integrity, and leadership.
They equally appreciated his family for the unwavering support that contributed to his success, describing him as a role model for younger public servants and a shining example of dedication to duty.
As the FRSC intensifies preparations for the busy travel season, Mohammed reaffirmed the Corps’ resolve to enforce traffic laws, promote road user education, and enhance collaboration with transport unions, law enforcement agencies, and civil society groups.
He noted that through continuous reforms, training, and technological innovations, the Corps aims to further reduce accidents and fatalities across Nigerian roads.
“The ember months should not be associated with fear or accidents. With discipline, vigilance, and responsibility, we can make our roads safe for everyone,” Mohammed concluded.
The FRSC Valedictory Lecture Series continues to serve as a platform for honouring distinguished officers while sharing knowledge, experience, and strategies for improving public service delivery in Nigeria.
