The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has embarked on a 30-day intensive operation, tagged ‘Operation Karara’, aimed at checking the excesses of motorists who disregard traffic lights in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Muta’a Chorrie, made this announcement while addressing operatives at the sector command on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the operation, which will take place sometime in September, will be carried out by the Corps’ Traffic Control and Monitoring Unit.

Chorrie noted that the exercise was aimed at combating reckless disregard of traffic rules by motorists, especially commercial drivers, in the area.

This would ensure that road safety is restored on the roads of the six communities in the FCT, he said.

“The FRSC Headquarters has committed the necessary resources, including 200 additional personnel, 15 patrol vehicles, 10 motorcycles and four tow trucks, to enable strict enforcement.

“The Traffic Control and Monitoring Unit of the FRSC is leading this special operation aimed at enhancing road safety in the area.

“This campaign is aimed at helping to check the attitude of drivers towards traffic rules and regulations and that the necessary logistics are taken care of.

“We will ensure that the streets are clean again,” he said.

Chorrie disclosed that sensitization campaigns have been conducted at major car parks, religious centres and public spaces to inform the public on the risks of transporting petroleum products with passengers.

He said: “All unit commanders have been instructed to ensure that no vehicle in their wagons is allowed to transport fuel with passengers into the territory.”

The FRSC boss called on road users to adhere to the directive and warned that the Corps would not tolerate reckless driving behaviour in the area.

Chorrie promised that the Corps would implement effective traffic management strategies and promote socio-economic development of the territory without compromising legal standards.

FRSC Field Marshal Shehu Mohammed on August 30 ordered an immediate crackdown on the transportation of flammable products such as fuel with passengers.
