The Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor, Dr Mamman Salisu, has congratulated the Controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, on the extension of his tenure by President Bola Tinubu.
In a congratulatory message he issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Salisu described the extension as a welcomed development and recognition of the importance of continuity.
He expressed confidence that the renewed mandate would enable Nwakuche to consolidate the achievements recorded under his leadership.
Salisu, who is a retired Controller of Correction said the extension would provide an opportunity to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance operational efficiency and advance the service’s contribution to national security.
He also expressed optimism that the renewed tenure would facilitate sustained improvements in the welfare of correctional officers.
“It will also promote professionalism and discipline among personnel, and strengthen policies and programmes for the rehabilitation, reformation and reintegration of offenders into society,”he said.
The governor’s aide said effective correctional administration should ensure that offenders were given the opportunity to become responsible and productive members of society after serving their sentences.
The retired controller stressed that continuity in leadership was essential for the consistent implementation of policies, the advancement of institutional reforms and the achievement of the service’s strategic objectives.
He noted that a well-functioning correctional system played a vital role in promoting public safety, upholding the rule of law and supporting peaceful coexistence across the country.
Salisu, who has extensive experience in correctional administration, further emphasised the importance of visionary leadership, institutional collaboration and the collective commitment of officers and other stakeholders.
This, he said would help in building a more effective, humane and professionally driven correctional system in Nigeria.
He expressed confidence in Nwakuche’s continued commitment to the progress and development of the service, while wishing him greater success in his renewed tenure.
Salisu also prayed that Almighty God would grant the Controller-General wisdom, sound health, strength and courage to discharge the responsibilities of his office with distinction.
He reiterated his congratulations to Nwakuche on the renewed opportunity to serve the nation, expressing optimism that his continued leadership would contribute to the development of the NCoS.
NAN reports that President Tinubu on Tuesday approved an 18-month tenure extension for Nwakuche.
Following the approval, Nwakuche’s tenure will now end on May 26, 2028.
The approval, which followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, addressed a succession gap in both services and would allow the board enough time to appoint successors, said a statement by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
