Marshal Shehu Mohammed of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) condemned the unprovoked attacks and abuses committed by officers of the corps on the roads and promised to prosecute the drivers.
The FRSC Corps Marshal said this during his inaugural address to staff on Wednesday in Abuja.
Mohammed said the FRSC remains the country’s lead agency in road traffic administration and safety management, with powers to arrest and prosecute offending drivers.
According to him, the founding fathers worked tirelessly to consolidate the ideals rooted in the body, thus creating a strong legacy that needed to be revived.
“This will be to mitigate what we are experiencing today, such as mob actions, personnel demolitions, insults, and attacks on our personnel on duty, among others.
“The worst thing is to shoot down our patrol cars, which is unacceptable,” he said.
Mohammed said such actions would no longer be tolerated.
He said his predecessor, Dauda Ali-Biu, entered into a partnership with the Nigerian Bar Association, promising to leverage it to continue prosecuting erring drivers involved in such acts.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of Mohammed as Corps Marshal and Executive Director of the FRSC on May 20.
Mohammed was the Zonal Commander-in-Chief (ZCO) responsible for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Niger.
