The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has applauded the intelligence gathering capacity of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) saying that the Corps was very critical to the security architecture of Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo made this statement when he visited the FRSC headquarters in Abuja.
He charged officers and men of the corps to excel in road safety management and continue to demonstrate professionalism in the performance of their duties.
According to him, intelligence gathered with the increased visibility of the Corps will help to enhance the nation’s security.
“I believe the FRSC has a role to play even within Nigeria’s internal security architecture,” he stated.
The Minister, who noted the role played by the Corps in ensuring road safety, added that the FRSC remains committed to its mandate of ensuring the security of lives and property.
“We appreciate your support and recognition of your efforts and look forward to continuing to collaborate with you,” he said.
Responding, FRSC Corps Marshal Mallam Shehu Mohammed thanked the Minister for his support and recognition of the FRSC’s role in internal security.
The Corps Marshal said the Minister’s statement was proof of the FRSC’s strategic position in the country’s security framework.
Mohammed added that the FRSC, as the lead agency in road safety management, has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt to emerging security challenges.
He said “in recent times, the FRSC has expanded its scope of operations to include intelligence gathering, surveillance and enforcement of traffic laws.
“These efforts have significantly contributed to reducing road accidents and increasing national security,” he said.
Mohammed noted that the FRSC’s role in internal security was multifaceted and said the Corps’ presence on roads and highways provided a visible deterrent to criminal activities.
This, he added, has made its intelligence gathering capabilities support other security agencies in their operations.
He also said that the FRSC’s collaboration with other security agencies has also facilitated the sharing of information and best practices, leading to a more coordinated approach to national security.
“I must commend your good work as Minister of Interior. Your strategic interventions have yielded remarkable results, and one notable achievement is the streamlining of the process for obtaining an international passport in just two weeks.
“The FRSC will continue to evolve and adapt to emerging security challenges; we remain committed to our core mandate of ensuring road safety.
“The Corps’ efforts to reduce road accidents and deaths are closely linked to its contributions to national security,” he said.
The Corps Marshal assured that the FRSC will continue to work tirelessly to ensure road safety and contribute to national security.
