The Barak and Jael Foundation has launched a nationwide programme to fund vocational training and cover West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for selected inmates in correctional facilities, May 5, 2026. The initiative aims to improve rehabilitation outcomes by equipping inmates with practical skills and access to education.
The Executive Director of the foundation, Kinsia Irek, announced the programme during an event held in honour of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, as part of activities marking his birthday. The announcement was confirmed in a statement issued by the Nigerian Correctional Service Public Relations Office.
Irek said more than 50 inmates have already benefited from training in tailoring, carpentry, information and communication technology, and cosmetology. She added that the foundation will fully sponsor WAEC examination fees for participants to support their academic progress while in custody.
“The programme focuses on motivated inmates and provides them with tools for successful reintegration into society,” Irek said. “It represents a pathway to transformation and a second chance for many individuals.”
According to her, the initiative was inspired by Kalu’s advocacy for prison reform, education and rehabilitation. She emphasized that expanding access to education and vocational skills could help reduce repeat offenses and promote long-term social stability.
“Education remains a powerful tool for change. By investing in inmates, we are investing in safer communities,” she said.

The foundation is working with correctional authorities to ensure the sustainability of the programme. Early participants have reportedly expressed optimism, with several preparing to sit for upcoming WAEC examinations later this year.
In his remarks, the Officer in Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Assistant Controller of Corrections Sunday Ejeh, commended the initiative. He said the facility would fully utilize the opportunity to enhance inmate rehabilitation and personal development.
The Barak and Jael Foundation is a non-governmental organisation focused on education, health and community development, with particular attention to vulnerable populations, including inmates and young people.
