Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Peoples Democratic Party leader Nyesom Wike said Friday that political parties can only gain credibility as opposition forces by winning elections, not by forming short-term coalitions or relying on rhetoric, April 17, 2026.
Wike made the remarks during a visit to the PDP national headquarters, Wadata House, where he pledged loyalty to the party’s newly elected National Working Committee and called for unity ahead of future elections.
He dismissed claims by smaller political groups positioning themselves as leading opposition voices, arguing that electoral success remains the only measure of political relevance.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning elections,” Wike said. “Those claiming leadership must first prove it at the polls.”
His comments come as Nigeria’s political landscape shifts, with parties and alliances repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reaffirming his commitment to the PDP, Wike said his visit was intended to demonstrate support for the new leadership and encourage internal cohesion after a period of crisis.
“I am here to show solidarity and to assure you of my loyalty to the National Working Committee,” he said.
Wike acknowledged that the PDP has faced internal challenges but expressed confidence that the party is gradually stabilising. He stressed that rebuilding the party would require discipline, sacrifice and strategic planning.
He urged the leadership to prioritise reconciliation, particularly by engaging members who have left the party but may still be willing to return.
“Reach out to them. Many are still interested, especially when it comes to participation and opportunities,” he said.
The minister also advised party leaders to remain focused despite ongoing legal disputes, expressing optimism that the PDP would continue to prevail in court.

“We have recorded victories at different levels, and we must stay united and focused,” he added.
In response, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed said the new leadership is committed to rebuilding the party’s strength and restoring public confidence.
“We are determined to reposition the party and take it to a higher level,” Mohammed said. “We understand the expectations of Nigerians and will not disappoint.”
He added that the PDP remains a strong platform for national leadership and is preparing to compete effectively in future elections.
National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu also welcomed Wike’s visit, describing it as a morale booster for party officials and a sign of renewed commitment from key stakeholders.
The visit reflects ongoing efforts within the PDP to rebuild unity and strengthen its position as a major opposition party, amid growing competition and evolving political alliances across Nigeria.
